Fist Swimming (and Tennis Ball Drill)

Purpose: to develop high elbow pull creating more surface area

Pointers: concentrate on using your forearm as your paddle, keep elbow high during pull

  • As you swim freestyle, swim with your hands in fists. Drag the fingertips along the surface of the water during recovery.

  • Assess your body position and rotation throughout this drill.

A variation to this drill is to swim half a lap with fists and then resume open palm swimming for the final half concentrating on using the entire surface area of both your hand and forearm as a paddle.

Another variation is to swim with tennis balls in your hands.
